Sunset Park is the only public park in the Village of Cayuga Heights. The park dates the inception of the Village and was donated to preserve a public space with spectacular views of Cayuga Lake and the adjacent valley. Over time, some of its original character has been lost, creating modern concerns that need to be addressed. WPD conducted a master plan study to review the park’s history, its current use, and its future use. This involved research and stakeholder meetings with Village officials, members of the public, and the Village Historian. Our master plan study took a ‘light touch’ approach that respects the spirit of the park and its history while considering contemporary concerns including Fourth of July gatherings, parking, maintenance, and invasive species control. Ongoing public engagement includes public informational meetings, an online survey, and a digital scrapbook to archive memories, photographs, and stories of the historic park.
